(Witness) NewspaperWinifred Maude Mote was mentioned in The Sydney Morning Herald, Sydney, NSW, Australia, on 27 April 1933 as follows:

MR. W. I. B. MOTE.

The death occurred yesterday of Mr. W. I. B. Mote, aged 80 years. Although, perhaps, not so well known to the present generation of musicians, Mr. Mote was a leading figure in Sydney musical circles many years ago. In- deed, his pioneering work, especially in choral music, was such that its influence is still in evidence. He arrived in New South Wales in 1873, and soon afterwards took up the position of choirmaster at the Bourke-street Congregational Church. Later on he was choirmaster and leader of the orchestra for 23 years at the Centenary Hall, York-street (the then headquarters of what is now known as the Central Methodist Mission). There he introduced some of the works which have continued to increase in popularity, such as "Olivet to Calvary," "Penitence, Pardon, and Peace," and other works by Maunder and by Gaul. He was in close touch with those two composers, and was thus enabled to intro- duce most of their new compositions into Australia. He was at one time librarian of the Sydney Liedertafel, and was largely re- sponsible for the high standard to which the orchestra of that organisation attained. In recent years he had lived in retirement at

Hunter's Hill.

Mr. Mote is survived by Mrs Mote and by three sons and a daughter by his first marriage. The sons are Messrs. Arthur, Arnold, and Livingstone Mote, and the daugh-

ter is Mrs. W. M. Gee.

The funeral will take place this morning, leaving the residence at Hunter's Hill at 10 o'clock for the Rookwood Cemetery.3
